Modern Cultural Icons in Your Ceremony

I explored heritage traditions in marriage ceremonies, but that’s just one way to make your wedding special! Today, we’re fortunate to live in an era overflowing with incredible art and culture—everything from music and games to television and film. These modern treasures aren’t just entertainment; they’re often the threads that weave our stories together.

When I talk to couples about their love stories, many mention bonding over shared interests—a favorite movie, novel, band, or game. These shared passions play a big role in shaping relationships. Incorporating them into your wedding ceremony can make the day uniquely yours and create unforgettable memories for your guests.

Let’s explore fun and meaningful ways to bring modern cultural influences into your ceremony.

Medieval Wedding in a Castle

Who doesn’t love castles? They are beautiful symbols of strength and solidity, a perfect place to celebrate a union of two people in love. This couple that I married a few years ago decided to bring this dream to life. Their passion for medieval history and dress came together to create a beautiful ceremony in a local castle, complete with crowns for the bride and groom, as well as suitable vestments for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. If you have a great officiant, you can even get them to dress up too! Ideas for creating your medieval  wedding https://www.pinterest.com/barbearly/medieval-wedding/

Star Wars Wedding

Few moments in cinematic history are as memorable as Han Solo’s calm reply to Princess Leia’s heartfelt confession as he faces the cryo chamber: “I love you.”“I know.” While it may not be the most traditional romantic exchange, it’s undeniably iconic.

For decades, Star Wars has captured the imagination of multiple generations, creating a galaxy-wide fanbase that continues to thrive through conventions, watch parties, and spirited discussions about favorite Jedi and Sith. It’s no surprise that many couples have bonded over their shared love for this.

One couple I had the pleasure of working with infused Star Wars into their wedding in unforgettable ways. From a playful lightsaber battle in full wedding attire to a cake that would make any Star Wars fan swoon, their celebration brought the magic of the galaxy far, far away right to their guests. Safe to say, no one forgot those epic moments!

If you and your partner share a love for Star Wars, the possibilities are endless. From themed décor and lightsabers, there are countless ways to infuse the force into your big day. Just one tip for the grooms: maybe skip the Darth Vader mask—it can be tough to kiss through that!

Game of Thrones

If you love the grandeur of medieval-themed events but crave a touch of fantasy, a Game of Thrones-inspired wedding might be the perfect choice for you and your spouse-to-be. As one of the most iconic shows of the past decade (despite the divisive ending), Game of Thrones has left a lasting legacy that rivals the cultural impact of Star Wars.

The couple pictured above took their inspiration to the next level, featuring a dramatic longsword instead of a bridal bouquet, making the kiss where they dip a real challenge.   But if wielding weaponry isn’t your style, there are plenty of other ways to channel this spirit. Some ideas to consider: incorporate dragons into your attire, decor, or as a wedding cake topper.  You choose crowns, goblets, a red dress like the Red Priestess, or a fur cloak like Jon Snow

Whether you want to fully embrace the fantasy or add just a few thematic elements, a Game of Thrones wedding can transport your guests to another world and make your day unforgettable.

Halloween / Dia de los Muertos

Some people, like myself, absolutely love Halloween. There’s just something about dressing up and acting silly for a night that makes Halloween the most fun holiday out of the year! Not to mention all the spooky decorations, falltime weather, and Jack-O-Lanterns.

While All Hallow’s Eve and Dia de los Muertos are older traditions, having weddings on these days is a pretty new idea. Take the couple above, for instance. Halloween was their absolute favorite holiday, and they made it the centerpiece of their big day. The bride embraced the theme with a stunning black dress, and they encouraged their guests to join the fun by arriving in costume.

Halloween weddings are the perfect opportunity to incorporate seasonal touches, from autumnal wreaths and pumpkin accents to warm fall colors. Whether you opt for whimsical décor or lean into the eerie elegance of the season, a Halloween wedding is a celebration your guests will never forget. After all, what’s more memorable than a love story wrapped in a little mystery and magic?

Marvel Comics

The Marvel Universe has dominated cinema over the past decade, with an astonishing 33 movies since 2007, not to mention TV shows and spinoffs. For fans, incorporating Marvel elements into a wedding can be a fun and personal touch. Take the couple above, for instance—they had a particular fondness for Captain America, which was showcased stylishly through their themed footwear.

There are endless possibilities for Marvel-themed weddings. You might choose a classic pairing like Wonder Woman and Superman (cross-universe but iconic!) or a modern duo such as Wanda and Vision from the hit show WandaVision. If full-on costumes feel too unconventional, consider subtle yet striking options like superhero-themed shoes or a Marvel-inspired wedding cake featuring your favorite heroes. Another idea? Let your wedding party embody the characters while you and your spouse stick to traditional attire.

Modern Cultural Icons & Your Wedding

Whether you’re inspired by Marvel, Star Wars, medieval castles, or Halloween, the key to a perfect wedding is making it uniquely yours. Incorporating elements of modern culture can make your big day personal, memorable, and fun for everyone involved.  Choose an officiant who will honor your wishes, and work to fit into the theme. As you saw in the medieval wedding above, I’m happy to go all out for my couples if they request a specific theme and want me to look the part.

Once again if you need any inspiration, want someone to bounce ideas off of, or just need someone to tell you your wedding theme isn’t crazy, reach out, and let’s chat about it.
